اشتهرت بلقب "سيدة الغناء العربي"، و"كوكب الشرق".
قدمت نحو 320 أغنية، وصُنفت أغنيتها "الأطلال" ضمن أفضل مائة أغنية أنتجت في القرن العشرين.
ولدت فاطمة إبراهيم السيد البلتاجي (المعروفة بأم كلثوم)
-حسب المثبت في السجلات الرسمية- يوم 4 مايو/أيار 1908، (أو 31 ديسمبر/كانون الأول 1898،
وفقا لمصادر مقربة منها) في قرية طماي الزهايرة (محافظة الدقهلية) بمصر.
غنت أم كلثوم قرابة 320 أغنية من ألحان وكلمات مشاهير الملحنين والمؤلفين،
وبرعت في المديح النبوي والغناء الديني -خاصة في أداء القصائد الطويلة والشعر القديم- ومنها:
"نهج البردة"
"سلوا قلبي"
"ولد الهدى"
"أراك عصي الدمع"
"رباعيات الخيام"
. كما نجحت في الغناء العاطفي، ومنه أغاني:
"أنت عمري"
"الأطلال"
"الحب كله"
"أروح لمين"
"أغداً ألقاك".
شاركت بالتمثيل والغناء في ستة أفلام خلال 1935-1948، وهي:
"وداد"
"نشيد الأمل"
"دنانير"
"عايدة"
"سلاّمة"
ثم
"فاطمة"
"تنبيه"
