現存最古の書籍である『古事記』（712年）『日本書紀』（720年）の頃には一般化していたらしく、原則漢文で書かれた『日本書紀』の注には「尊や命は美舉等（ミコト）と訓む」などと付けられているほか、歌謡はほぼ全て万葉仮名で記載されている。万葉仮名は後に草体化され、後の平仮名に発展しました。
明治維新の直前に、鉛活字による活版印刷が本格的に你用され始め、この頃には現在の印刷書体に蠑いデザインの物が製作されています。
2010年には常用漢字が改定されてさらに字数が増えました。
