Akilan was the pen name of Akilandam, who was born on 27 June at Perungalore, Pudukkottai District . He spent his childhood in a small hamlet called Perungalore near Pudukottai. His father Vaithiya Lingam Pillai was an accounts officer and adored his only son Akilan very much. Unfortunately, the boy lost his loving father at an early age. But his mother Amirthammal was a loving person, and being a creative person herself, she moulded her son into a writer.
The author was attracted by Gandhian philosophy during his school days and he discontinued his college education at Pudukotai to join the freedom struggle. Later, after Indian independence, he joined the Railway Mail Service, after which he joined the AIR (All India Radio) and became a full-fledged writer. His stories began to appear mostly in small magazines.
அகலன் என்று அறயப்படும் ப. வ. அகலாண்டம் (ஜூன் 27, 1922 - ஜனவர 31, 1988) புதன ஆசரயராக, சறுகதையாளராக, நாடகாசரயராக, சறுவர் நூலாசரயாராக, மொழப்பெயர்ப்பாளராக, கட்டுரையாளராக சறப்புப் பெற்ற தமழ் எழுத்தாளர். சத்தரப்பாவை நூலுக்காக, 1975ஆம் ஆண்டன் ஞான பீட வருது பெற்றார். இவ்வருது பெற்ற முதல் தமழ் எழுத்தாளர் இவரேயாவார். வேங்கையன் மைந்தன் என்ற நாவலுக்காக, 1963 ஆம் ஆண்டு தமழுக்கான சாகத்ய அகாதம வருது பெற்றார்.
அகலனுடைய பெரும்பாலான படைப்புகள் பல இந்தய மொழகளலும் சீனம், மலாய், ஜெர்மன், ஆங்கலம் மற்றும் ரஷ்ய மொழ போன்ற அயல்நாட்டு மொழகளலும் மொழபெயர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
‘பாவை வளக்கு’ தரைப்படமாக எடுக்கப்பட்டது. இவரது ‘கயல் வழ’ என்னும் புதனம் மதுரையை மீட்ட சுந்தரபாண்டயன் என்ற தரைப்படமாக எடுக்கப்பட்டது.
அகலன் எண்ணற்ற சறுகதைகளையும் எழுதயருக்கறார். குமுதம், ஆனந்த வகடன், கலைமகள், தனமண போன்ற இதழ்களல் 1950கள் முதல் 80கள் வரை அகலன் எழுதய சறுகதைகள் தொகுக்கப்பட்டு இருபாகங்களாக வெளயாக இருக்கன்றன.
