وقديما كان العرب يقسمون ساعات الليل والنهار الى 24 مقطعا 12 مقطع للنهار و 12 مقطعا لليل حيث انهم لم يكن لديهم ساعه في يدهم تدلهم على وقت الحد ولذلك لجئوا الى هذه الطريقه وهي المقاطع الزمنيه التي يدل كل منها على ساعه معينه وسمو كل مقطع باسم معين ونبداء بساعات النهار
