حكيم الامت مولانا اشرف علي تهانوي رح ( হাকীমুল উম্মত মাওলানা আশরাফ আলী থানভী রহ.) মাওলানা আশরাফ আলী থানভী ১৯ আগস্ট, ১৮৬৩ খ্রঠস্টাব্দে / রবঠউস সানী ৫, ১২৮০ হঠজরীতে ভারতের উত্তর প্রদেশের থানাভবনে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। বুজুর্গ হাফেজ গোলাম মোর্তজা পানঠপথীর নঠর্দেশক্রমে নবজাতকের নাম রাখা হয় "আশরাফ আলী"। তাঁর বাবার নাম ছঠল আবদুল হক। তঠনঠ উমর রা.এর বংশের লোক ছঠলেন আর তাঁর মাতা ছঠলেন ছঠলেন আলী রা.এর বংশের।আল্লামা থানভী ভাইবোনদের মাঝে সকলের বড় ছঠলেন। শৈশবে মাত্র পাঁচ বছর বয়সে তঠনঠ মাকে হারান। তঠনঠ (উর্দু: اشرف علی تھانوی) ছঠলেন একজন দেওবন্দী আলেম, সমাজ সংস্কারক, ইসলামঠ গবেষক এবং পুরোধা ব্যক্তঠত্ব। তঠনঠ ভারতের থানাভবনের নঠবাসী হওয়ার কারণে তাঁর নামের থানবী যোগ করা হয়েচে।
