ノニは、学問的にはアカネ科に属する植物です。 成長すると５ｍから８ｍくらいの大きさにもなる常緑の潅木です。 学名はモリンダ・シトリフォニアといいます。
生命力が抜群で、種子は海面上を滑るように、 潮の流れに乗って周囲に広まっていく特徴があります。 なので、太平洋上に広がるポリネシアの島々に、 流れ着いて生息しています。 東南アジアや沖縄などにも漂着しています。
ハワイや゠ヒチなどがノニの産地として有名です。 ハワイでは、「ノニ（Noni）」と呼ぶので、 それが日本にも伝わり、ノニと呼ぶのが一般的になっています。 沖縄では「ヤエヤマアオキ」です。
