ฐานข้อมูลวิทยานิพนธ์และการค้นคว้าแบบอิสระของมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ (CMU e-Theses) จัดทำขึ้นโดยการนำเอาตัวเล่มวิทยานิพนธ์และการค้นคว้าแบบอิสระของมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ มาจัดทำให้อยู่ในรูปเอกสารดิจิทัล และสร้างส่วนเชื่อมโยง (Link) ให้ผู้ใช้สามารถสืบค้นข้อมูลได้จากฐานข้อมูล CMUL OPAC หรือคลิกเลือกจากฐานข้อมูล CMU e-Theses ที่หน้าเว็บไซต์ของสำนักหอสมุดโดยตรง รวมทั้งผู้ใช้บริการสามารถเข้าใช้ฐานข้อมูลดังกล่าวผ่านระบบเครือข่ายมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ (CMU NET) และระบบเครือข่ายห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัย ไทย (ThaiLIS)
ปัจจุบัน งานระบบคอมพิวเตอร์ สำนักหอสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ได้พัฒนาแอปพลิเคชัน เพื่อสืบค้นฐานข้อมูล CMU e-Theses ผ่านระบบปฏิบัติการแอนดรอยด์ ในลักษณะออฟไลน์ (Offline) ซึ่งผู้ใช้สามารถค้นหาได้จาก ชื่อเรื่อง(Title) ชื่อผู้แต่ง (Author) หัวเรื่อง (Subject) และปีพิมพ์ (Year) หากผู้ใช้ต้องการดาวน์โหลดเอกสารฉบับเต็ม (Full Text) จะต้องเชื่อมต่อกับอินเทอร์เน็ตก่อนเพื่อเปิดดูเอกสารฉบับเต็มนั้น
