According to the Hindu myths, the demon Mahishasur had been troubling all the Gods of the Swarg Lok (paradise) and the living beings on earth since he had acquired undefeatable power. Even the mighty gods, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma couldn't defeat him. So they decided to do something in order to free the living beings and restore the Swarg Lok.
So they gave rise to Goddess Durga who is despotism of Ma Shakti and gave her the god-like weapons. She killed Mahishasur and Vijayadashmi is celebrated as her victory over him. Due to this reason, Durga Pooja is conducted during Vijayadashmi. Dussehra is the victory of good over evil and like every other festival it has lot of legends attached to it.
