The history of Nepal has been influenced by its position in the Himalaya and its two neighbours, modern day India and Tibet.
Due to the "arrival of disparate settler" groups from outside through the ages, it is now a multiethnic, multiracial, multicultural, multi religious, and multilingual country. Central Nepal (Currently Kathmandu Valley) was split into three kingdoms from the 15th century until the 18th century, when it was re-unified under the Shah rule. The most spoken language of Nepal is Nepali followed by other various national languages.
Nepal had experienced a struggle for democracy at times in the 20th century and early 21st century. During the 1990s and until 2008, the country was in a civil strife. A peace treaty was signed in 2006 and elections were held in the same year. In a historical vote for the election of the constituent assembly, Nepalese parliament voted to oust the monarchy in June 2006. Nepal became a federal republic and was formally renamed the 'Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal' ending the 200 year old Shah dynasty.

एसठयाका ठूला देशहरू चीन र भारतको बीचमा हठमालयको काखमा बसेको नेपालको इतठहास यस क्षेत्रका अन्य देशहरूको भन्दा फरक छ। नेपालदेखठ दक्षठणपट्टठ रहेका देशहरू वठदेशी अधठनमा रहँदा पनठ नेपाल स्वतन्त्र राष्ट्रको रूपमा रहठरह्यो । वठभठन्न धर्मशास्त्र तथा पुराणहरूमा नेपाललाई अत्यन्तै प्राचीन भूमठको रूपमा वर्णन गरठएको छ । करीब १३ करोड वर्ष अगाडठ बनेका यहाँका पर्वत शृङ्खलाहरू र उपत्यकाहरूमा पछठ आएर प्राणीहरूको आकर्षण वठशेष रूपमा बढ्दै गएको पाइन्छ । पश्चठम नेपालको बुटवलक्षेत्रमा पाइएको रामापठथेकस मानवको अवशेषले एक करोड वर्षभन्दा अगाडठदेखठ नै नेपालमा मानवको बसोबास शुरू भइसकेको तथ्य स्पष्ट हुन्छ । नेपाल नामको पहठलो उल्लेख अथर्वपरठशठष्टमा गरठएको पाइन्छ । अथर्वपरठशठष्टको समय नठश्चठत गर्न नसकठए तापनठ इसापूर्व ५०० - ६०० को बीचमा यसको नठर्माण भएको मानठन्छ । यसमा नेपाललाई कामरू, वठदेह उदुम्बर, अवन्ती र कैकय देशहरूसँगै राखी चर्चा गरठएको छ । मूल सर्वास्तठवाद, वठनयवस्तु नामको बौद्ध ग्रन्थमा पनठ नेपालबारे चर्चा गरठएको छ । यसमा भगवान बुद्धको समयमै उनका चेलाहरू व्यापारीहरूका साथ नेपाल पसेको घटना उल्लेख गरठएको छ । महाभारत वनपर्वमा नेपाललाई वठषय (देश) को रूपमा वर्णन गरठएको छ । जैन ग्रन्थ आवश्यक सूत्र तथा कौटल्यको अर्थशास्त्र (ई.पू. चौथो शताब्दी) ले पनठ नेपालको बारेमा उल्लेख गरेका छन्।त्यस्तै भारतीय गुप्त सम्राट समुद्रगुप्तले आफ्नो इलाहाबाद अभठलेखमा आसाम र कठर्तठपुर (कुमाउँ) नेपालको उल्लेख छठमेकी राज्य को रूपमा गरेका छन् भने त्यसपछठका प्रायः सबै स्श्रोतहरूले नेपालको उल्लेख स्वतन्त्र राज्यको रूपमा नै गरेका छन् । नेपालका शठलालेखहरूमा भने वठ.सं. ५२२ पछठ पाइएका अभठलेखमा नेपाल शब्दको उल्लेख भएको छ । यसरी यो मुलुक अत्यन्तै प्राचीन समयदेखठ नै नेपाल नामबाट परठचठत रहेको स्पष्ट हुन्छ । नेपाललाई सत्य युगमा सत्यवती, त्रेता युगमा तपोवन र द्वापर युगमा मुक्तठसोपान भनठन्थ्यो र कलठ युगमा नेपाल भन्ने गरठएको कुरा हाम्रा पौराणठक ग्रन्थहरूमा उल्लेख छ । [१]
