Bible är inom kristendomen en fastställd samling skrifter av alldeles särskild betydelse och därför kallad ”helig skrift”. Ofta är skrifterna samlade i en bok, Den Heliga Skrift, uppdelad i två

De judiska heliga skrifterna, som ingår i Gamla Testamentet, utkristalliserades efter hand som fasta textsamlingar. I Nya Testamentet omtalas dessa skrifter vanligen som ”Skriften” eller som ”Lagen
och Profeterna”. De nytestamentliga författarna, som skriver på grekiska, citerar dem ofta via en redan befintlig grekisk översättning, Septuaginta. I den tidiga kristna kyrkan lästes "lagen" och
"profeterna" utifrån övertygelsen att dessa texter egentligen handlade om Jesus Kristus. Efterhand kom också ett antal skrifter som erkändes vara skrivna av apostlarna eller deras nära medarbetare
att spridas och läsas offentligt i de kristna kyrkorna. De fyra evangelierna, ett antal brev av Paulus och andra apostlar, och ytterligare några texter kom så småningom att ingå i den kristna kanon.
Därav namnet Nya Testamentet och Gamla Testamentet som i vissa praktverk kom att samlas i en och samma bok. Beteckningen ”Skrifterna” kunde då även användas om de apostoliska texterna i kanon. Om hur
